Don't screw 'em up

When I asked an American friend to pass me a screw driver to repair my motorbike, he said with a laugh:

Don't screw it up!

I could not understand why. What that screwdriver was for without using it to screw either up or down.

When I was young and smart, an American guy came up and asked:
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Um, the sky?” I replied.
Ages later, my hair grew grey, my brain became sluggish. An old American friend dropped by and asked the same stupid question:
“Hey, what’s up?”
